a 2012 birthday email
February 12, 2012
My Dearest Stephanie,
I was just reminded by an article in the NY Times, that this birthday for you is a very auspicious birthday – 2012-02-12. It is the end of the 2nd 12-year cycle of the Chinese horoscope when 24 years ago you just missed being born in the Year of the Dragon by maybe a few days.
Exactly 100 years ago, the 12th of February 1912 was the last day of the Qing Dynasty, when the Empress of China abdicated the throne on behalf of the 6-year-old boy Puyi, the last Emperor of China, thus bringing China into the current modern age of nationhood in the world. Also, as a result, Sun Yat-Sen gave up his position as the 1st president of China, serving only a limited term, like George Washington.
It’s not a much celebrated day because there are other dates associated with Sun Yat-Sen, but for me, this wonderful date when you were born, and also being the same as Abraham Lincoln’s birthday makes me hope for great things and happiness for you, not just this year, but for all the years of your life.
All my love,
